Mission

The mission of the project is to support more equitable, reflective, and socially engaged approaches to music theory education using the core principles of critical pedagogy. Critical pedagogy is an educational philosophy that encourages students and educators to question systems of power, examine cultural contexts, and engage collaboratively in the creation of knowledge. Please visit the “Reading List” tab for more information.

Traditional music theory curricula have often privileged narrow musical canons, reinforced exclusionary pedagogical practices, and positioned music theory instruction as neutral or universal rather than historically and culturally situated. This project seeks to challenge those assumptions by providing accessible resources, scholarship, and opportunities for dialogue that encourage more inclusive and critically informed approaches to teaching and learning music theory.

Vision

This website envisions a music theory community grounded in collaboration, accessibility, critical reflection, and shared inquiry. Rather than presenting pedagogy as fixed or authoritative, this platform embraces ongoing dialogue, openness to revision, and collective exchange of ideas among educators, students, and scholars. This site aims to serve as a space where critical pedagogy practices can be explored, adapted, questioned, and expanded in ways that meaningfully support diverse learners and musical experiences.
